A nurses' day starts by grabbing patient's reports and making sure everything is okay. If the patient came in before her shift started, she needs to get to know the background. This will make everything easier for upcoming visits to the patient's room.
You might need to check not only on reports but also asking personally. People like being treated like they matter and not just like another number. As a nurse you will be the support that this kind of people need, specially for those that are in the intensive care unit.
Once you go and check at their rooms, you need to make sure everything is clean. Not just their sheets and bed, but also the patient himself. If he or she needs to take a bath you need to tell the CNA in charge about it. If patient needs medication or it is time for him to eat, then you can call the hospital's kitchen and order their food.
Check medications and prescriptions and administer properly as needed. Since you already know the patient's needs it will be easy to administer the proper medicine. If you are in doubt it is always better to ask the doctor in charge. If medications are easy then just leave directions to the nursing assistant of that shift so she can do it for you.
If you consider that the patient is doing better than the last time you were there, you need to let doctors know what's going on. Same thing goes if the conditions are not looking better and you believe there should be a new strategy involved. As a nurse you should have enough knowledge to recommend on your own, however, you must consult with somebody else before you do so.
If you think this is a good job fit for you, you can look online for open positions. Check at hospitals that might be expending and that will need your type of services. You can also do it the old fashion way and check classifieds for jobs. Although, with websites dedicated for job searching we recommend the first option better.
